Julie's experience

High Court defamation proceedings

Acted for each of the media applicants in the Dylan Voller proceedings in the High Court relating to digital intermediary liability for defamation. This landmark case became a primary catalyst for Australia's Stage 2 defamation reforms which protect page hosts from unfair third-party liability.

Media sources

Acted for a journalist, "F", in proceedings against the Queensland Crime and Corruption Commission. These proceedings involved a journalist who was subpoenaed by the CCC to reveal a confidential police source but refused to do so. The legal battle highlighted a loophole in Queensland's media protections, leading the state government to extend "shield laws" to CCC proceedings, meaning that journalists can no longer be compelled to reveal confidential sources unless a judge determines it is overwhelmingly in the public interest.

Multi-jurisdictional data breach

Advising a medical technology and healthcare company in relation to a multi-jurisdictional data breach incident, including reporting obligations and responses to regulatory inquiries.

Data breach

Advising a technology services company in relation to a data breach incident including responses to regulatory inquiries from several Australian law enforcement agencies, and regulators.

Online safety

Advising major global technology platform on compliance with Australia's online safety regime, including application of industry codes to evolving AI models.
