Biography

Briar acts for a broad range of clients from multinationals and household name brands, to fresh startups across retail, technology, software, gaming and creative industries. She is based in Brisbane and is an associate member of the Interactive Games and Entertainment Association.

Briar advises on software procurement and licensing, IP protection, commercialisation and strategy, privacy and data protection compliance, trade promotions and charitable gaming compliance. She manages local and global trade mark portfolios for retail and software development clients, and builds branding strategies for clients seeking to establish and grow brand value. Her digital entertainment practice supports game developers, production companies and other digital creatives with outsourcing, IP commercialisation strategy and enforcement, government and private funding applications, and negotiation with publishers, online platforms and distributors.

Briar's experience spans a range of complex technology and IP matters. She has advised one of Australia's largest insurers on IT procurement and technology agreements; a NASDAQ-100 listed company on the IP and privacy implications of rolling out a global NFT minting platform into Australia; various independent game developers on IP protection and Screen Australia grant funding; and an Australian technology company on major customer and subscription agreements, privacy and GDPR compliance, and trade mark portfolio management.

Briar has established a distinctive digital entertainment and games practice within the IP and technology team, building a profile in a sector where specialist legal support is scarce. Her ability to advise creative startups and growth-stage companies on IP structuring, funding, platform deals and commercialisation, alongside her mainstream IP and technology advisory practice, gives her a unique skillset.
